Sudden back pain

Back sprain and can’t get out of bed?

One awkward lift, a weekend of moving furniture or a long run of physical work, and suddenly you can’t sit up, let alone get into a taxi. A doctor comes to your home to check it’s a muscle strain and nothing more serious, and to get the pain under control.

Why a home visit for back pain

Getting to a clinic is often the hardest part.

Most sudden low back pain after physical exertion is a strain of the muscles and ligaments. It is very painful, and every movement — standing up, a car seat, a clinic chair — makes it worse.

At home, the doctor examines your back and checks the nerves in your legs to make sure there are no warning signs. Then the focus is relief: pain treatment, an MC if you need one, and practical advice on how to stay gently moving so you recover faster.

What the doctor does

Assessment and treatment, at home.

A check for red flags

An examination of your back, legs and nerves, so a simple strain can be told apart from something that needs a scan or a hospital.

Pain relief at home

Treatment for the pain and muscle spasm, with the option of an injection where appropriate, and a prescription for the days ahead.

An MC and a recovery plan

A medical certificate if you need one, and clear advice on movement, rest and when to follow up.

Safety first

When a home visit is not the right call.

Call 995 or go to A&E instead if

You have numbness around your groin, buttocks or inner thighs; new trouble passing urine or controlling your bladder or bowels; weakness or numbness spreading down one or both legs; back pain after a fall, accident or blow; back pain with fever; or sudden tearing pain in the back or chest. These need emergency assessment, not a home visit.

For a back that “went” after lifting or exertion with none of these, a home visit is a sensible way to get seen without moving. If you’re unsure, call us.

How it works

Care arrives in three simple steps.

  1. 1. Tell us what’s wrong
WhatsApp or call any hour. We ask a few questions and confirm the fee for your time window.
  2. 2. A doctor comes to you
Islandwide, day or night. The arrival window is confirmed when you call.
  3. 3. Treatment at home
The visit is a flat $300 in office hours (Mon–Fri, 8am–5pm) or $450 after hours, including a 30-minute consultation. Medication, consumables and procedures are billed on top and itemised on your receipt — the doctor tells you before anything extra is done.

Yes. A doctor examines your back and the nerves in your legs at home, treats the pain and spasm, and can give an MC. If anything points to a more serious cause, the doctor arranges the right next step.

Usually not. Most sudden back pain after exertion is a muscle or ligament strain that settles with time and movement, and a scan does not change the treatment. The doctor will tell you if your symptoms are an exception and refer you.

Yes. If the doctor assesses that you are unfit for work, a medical certificate is issued as part of the visit.

A day or two of taking it easy is fine, but long bed rest tends to slow recovery. The doctor will show you what movement is safe and how to build back up.
