Vomiting in early pregnancy

Severe morning sickness? IV fluids at home.

When morning sickness stops you keeping fluids down, you can quickly become dehydrated, exhausted and unable to face a clinic queue. A doctor comes to your home to assess you, treat the sickness with medication suitable in pregnancy, and give IV fluids if you need them.

How a home visit helps

Rehydrate at home — and know when hospital is the better place.

Nausea and vomiting are common in the first trimester. For some women it goes further: nothing stays down, you pass little urine and you feel faint. That is when rehydration helps, and often you start to feel better once you have had fluids and the vomiting is settled.

The doctor checks how dehydrated you are, asks about your pregnancy, and gives treatment chosen for use in pregnancy. If you need it, an IV drip is set up at home. The doctor will also tell you honestly if what they find means you should be seen by your obstetrician or in hospital instead — for example, if this is severe or keeps coming back. You get a memo for your obstetrician either way.

What the doctor does

Assessment and treatment, at home.

Pregnancy-aware assessment

Vital signs, signs of dehydration and the history of your pregnancy, so treatment is chosen with you and your baby in mind.

Anti-sickness treatment

Medication that is suitable in pregnancy to ease the nausea and vomiting, with a plan for the next few days.

You have pain on one side of your lower abdomen or in your shoulder tip, or any vaginal bleeding (in early pregnancy this must be checked in hospital); you are vomiting blood; you are confused, fainting or very drowsy; you have passed no urine for 12 hours or more; or you have a high fever. If you are under the care of an obstetrician, call their hospital line as well.

If you have been admitted for vomiting in this pregnancy before, or it is getting worse despite treatment, your obstetrician or a hospital may be the better place. If you’re unsure, call us and we’ll help you decide.

How it works

Care arrives in three simple steps.

  1. 1. Tell us what’s wrong
WhatsApp or call any hour. We ask a few questions and confirm the fee for your time window.
  2. 2. A doctor comes to you
Islandwide, day or night. The arrival window is confirmed when you call.
  3. 3. Treatment at home
The visit is a flat $300 in office hours (Mon–Fri, 8am–5pm) or $450 after hours, including a 30-minute consultation. Medication, consumables and procedures are billed on top and itemised on your receipt — the doctor tells you before anything extra is done.

Talk to our team

Yes, if the doctor assesses that you are dehydrated and can’t rehydrate by mouth. The doctor examines you at home, treats the nausea with medication suitable in pregnancy and sets up a drip if it is needed.

There are anti-sickness medicines that are commonly used in pregnancy. The doctor chooses treatment based on how far along you are and your medical history, and explains it to you before giving it.

Go to hospital if you have abdominal pain on one side, shoulder-tip pain, vaginal bleeding, vomiting blood, confusion or fainting, or no urine for 12 hours or more. Severe vomiting that keeps returning despite treatment is also best managed by your obstetrician or in hospital.

The doctor gives you a memo summarising the assessment and treatment, so you can share it with your obstetrician at your next appointment or sooner if needed.
