When a gout flare in your big toe, foot or knee makes even a sock or a bedsheet hurt, getting to a clinic is the last thing you can manage. A doctor comes to your home to confirm what’s going on, ease the pain and plan what happens next.
A gout attack usually comes on fast, often overnight: one joint becomes hot, red, swollen and exquisitely tender. Stairs, a taxi and a waiting room are hard work when you cannot put weight on your foot.
At home, the doctor examines the joint, checks that the picture fits gout rather than something that needs hospital, and starts treatment on the spot. You get a prescription, an MC if you need one, and a plan for the next few days — including when to see your regular doctor about preventing the next flare.
A proper examination to confirm the pattern fits gout and to rule out an infected joint or a fracture, which need different care.
Treatment to settle the inflammation and the pain, chosen around your kidneys, stomach and other medicines — with the option of an injection where appropriate.
Advice on rest, ice and fluids, a medication plan, and a memo for your GP about longer-term prevention once this attack has settled.

Book a home visitThe swollen joint comes with a high fever, shivering or you feel very unwell (an infected joint needs hospital treatment); the joint became painful after a fall or injury and may be broken; the leg below the joint is cold, pale or numb; or the calf is swollen and painful as well.
For a familiar-feeling gout flare with none of these, a home visit is often the simplest route to relief. If you’re unsure, call us and we’ll help you decide.
Yes. A doctor can examine the joint, confirm that it fits gout and start treatment for the pain and inflammation at your home. If anything suggests an infected joint or a fracture, the doctor will tell you and arrange hospital care instead.
A first attack is worth having examined, because a hot, swollen joint is not always gout. The doctor will look for signs of infection or injury and, where needed, arrange blood tests or refer you on. A first hot, swollen joint with a fever should be seen in hospital.
Where it is appropriate for you, yes. The doctor chooses the treatment around your kidney function, other medical conditions and current medicines, and explains the options and any extra cost before giving anything.
A flat $300 in office hours or $450 after hours, including a 30-minute consultation. Medication and any procedure are billed on top and itemised on your receipt.
